How to Increase Average Order Value Without Discounting
Most businesses focus on acquiring more customers to grow revenue. But increasing what each customer spends is often faster, cheaper, and more profitable than acquisition. Here's how to do it without discounting.
Bundle Products Strategically
Bundling complementary products increases the perceived value of the bundle while increasing your average order value. The key is choosing products that are naturally used together — not random items thrown together to justify a higher price. A bundle should feel like a convenience, not a forced upsell.
Introduce a Free Shipping Threshold
Setting a free shipping threshold just above your current average order value is one of the simplest and most effective AOV tactics. If your average order is $45, a free shipping threshold of $60 encourages customers to add one more item rather than pay for shipping.
Add a Product Recommendation at Checkout
"Customers who bought this also bought..." works because it presents additional value at the highest-intent moment of the purchase journey. The recommendation should be directly relevant and significantly lower in price than the cart total.
Introduce a Premium Option
For every product or service you sell, consider whether there's a premium version at 1.5–2x the price that a portion of your buyers would choose. You don't need everyone to buy it. If 20% of buyers choose the premium option, you've materially increased your average order value.
The fix: Calculate your current average order value. Set a specific target 20% higher. Identify which of these tactics is most natural for your business and test it this month.
