How to Integrate Your ERP With Your E-commerce Channels
The promise of an ERP is a single source of truth for your business data. But if your ERP doesn't integrate with your e-commerce channels, you're still manually syncing data between systems — which defeats the purpose.
The Core Integrations You Need
For a multi-channel e-commerce business, your ERP needs to integrate with your order management (pulling orders from every channel into one place), your inventory management (updating available stock across all channels in real time), your shipping (generating shipping labels and updating tracking), and your accounting (posting revenue, COGS, and fees automatically).
API Integration vs Pre-Built Connectors
Most modern ERPs offer pre-built connectors for major e-commerce platforms — Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, and others. Pre-built connectors are faster to implement and cheaper to maintain than custom API integrations. Before choosing an ERP, verify that the connectors you need are genuinely available and actively maintained — not listed as "available" but requiring a six-figure custom build.
Real-Time vs Batch Sync
Some integrations sync in real time — an order placed on Amazon appears in your ERP within seconds. Others sync in batches — every hour, or every night. For inventory management, real-time or near-real-time sync is essential to prevent overselling. For financial reporting, daily batches are typically acceptable.
Test Before You Go Live
Integration failures at launch are expensive and damaging to customer experience. Test every integration end-to-end with real transactions in a staging environment before going live. Specifically test edge cases — returns, partial shipments, cancelled orders, and international orders — because these are where integrations most commonly fail.
The fix: Map every data flow between your current systems and document where manual intervention is currently required. This map becomes your integration requirements document for any ERP evaluation.
