How to Use Performance Max Campaigns Without Losing Control
Performance Max campaigns serve ads across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail, and Maps from a single campaign. They can deliver exceptional results — or burn budget if configured incorrectly.
Provide Strong Asset Groups
PMax performance is directly tied to the quality of assets you provide — headlines, descriptions, images, and videos. Campaigns with minimal assets give Google limited options. Invest in your creative before launching.
Use Audience Signals
Audience Signals tell Google who to target first as the campaign learns. Provide Customer Match lists, website visitors, and In-Market audiences as signals. Better signals mean faster, more efficient optimization.
Set Brand Exclusions
PMax will serve ads on brand keyword searches by default — attributing those conversions to PMax rather than your more efficient branded Search campaign. Apply brand exclusions to prevent this overlap.
The fix: If you're running PMax, check your Audience Signals. If you're not providing Customer Match or website visitor audiences, add them immediately — this is the highest-leverage improvement for most underperforming PMax campaigns.
