How to Win the Amazon Buy Box in 2025

By Scott Nguyen · Mar 5, 2025 · 1 min read

The Buy Box is responsible for the majority of Amazon sales. If you're not winning it consistently, you're not competing effectively — regardless of how good your product is.

The Factors That Matter Most

Amazon weights Buy Box eligibility based on a combination of factors: fulfillment method (FBA wins over FBM almost every time), seller performance metrics (order defect rate, late shipment rate, cancellation rate), competitive pricing, and in-stock rate. No single factor guarantees the Buy Box — it's the combination.

FBA Is the Fastest Path

If you're not using FBA and your competitors are, you're starting behind. Amazon prioritically favours FBA sellers because it controls the customer experience from click to delivery. The fees are worth it on most products once you model them correctly.

Pricing Within the Winning Range

You don't need to be the cheapest. You need to be within Amazon's acceptable price range relative to competitors. Amazon looks at total price including shipping. An FBA seller at $29.99 with free Prime shipping often beats an FBM seller at $24.99 plus $6 shipping.

Keep Your Performance Metrics Clean

An order defect rate above 1%, a late shipment rate above 4%, or a cancellation rate above 2.5% will cost you Buy Box eligibility. Monitor these weekly and address issues immediately.

The fix: Pull your Buy Box percentage by ASIN in Seller Central. For any ASIN below 80%, investigate which of the four factors — fulfillment, pricing, metrics, or stock — is the problem.
