Understanding Google Ads Quality Score and Why It Matters

By Scott Nguyen · Sep 25, 2024 · 1 min read

Quality Score is Google's rating of the relevance and quality of your keywords, ads, and landing pages. It directly affects your cost per click and your ad position. A high Quality Score means you pay less for higher placement. A low Quality Score means you pay more for worse placement.

What Quality Score Is Made Of

Quality Score is calculated from three components: Expected Click-Through Rate (how likely your ad is to be clicked when shown), Ad Relevance (how closely your ad matches the intent behind the keyword), and Landing Page Experience (how relevant and useful your landing page is to someone who clicks your ad).

How to Improve Expected CTR

Write ads that are directly relevant to the keyword being searched. Include the keyword in your headline. Use emotional triggers and clear value propositions. Test multiple ad variations and let data determine which performs better. Higher CTR improves this component over time.

How to Improve Ad Relevance

Keep your ad groups tightly themed with closely related keywords. Your ad copy should reflect the specific keywords in each ad group. The tighter the match between keyword intent and ad copy, the higher your Ad Relevance score.

How to Improve Landing Page Experience

Your landing page should deliver on the promise of your ad. If the ad promises a free consultation, the landing page should prominently feature a consultation booking form. Page speed, mobile-friendliness, and low bounce rate all contribute to Landing Page Experience.

The fix: In Google Ads, click on a keyword and hover over the speech bubble to see its Quality Score components. Any component rated "Below Average" is your priority for improvement.
