What Is an ERP System and Does Your Business Need One?

By Scott Nguyen · Nov 27, 2024 · 1 min read

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are one of the most powerful tools a growing business can implement — and one of the most expensive to get wrong. Here's how to think about whether you need one.

What an ERP Actually Does

An ERP system integrates your core business processes — inventory, order management, purchasing, finance, HR, and reporting — into a single system. Instead of data living in separate spreadsheets, your accounting software, your inventory tool, and your order management system, everything lives in one place and talks to each other in real time.

Signs You're Ready for an ERP

You're spending significant time manually transferring data between systems. You're making inventory or purchasing decisions based on information that's hours or days old. You have multiple team members maintaining separate versions of the same data. Your financial close takes weeks because you're reconciling data from too many sources.

Signs You're Not Ready Yet

Your current processes are not documented. You're still figuring out your core business model. You're below $2M in revenue and your current tools are working. ERP implementations on unstructured processes create expensive chaos.

Choosing the Right System

The right ERP depends on your industry, size, and complexity. For most mid-market e-commerce businesses, platforms like NetSuite, SAP Business One, or Microsoft Business Central are the most common. Evaluate based on total cost of ownership — not just license fees but implementation, training, and ongoing support.

The fix: List your top five operational pain points. If most of them are data integration or reporting problems, an ERP evaluation is probably worth starting.
