Why Your Google Ads ROAS Is Low — And the Fix Most Agencies Miss

By Scott Nguyen · May 28, 2025 · 1 min read

A low ROAS on Google Ads is one of the most common complaints I hear from businesses who've tried working with agencies. The real problem is usually neither the budget nor the agency — it's the fundamentals.

Check Your Search Term Reports First

Most agencies set up campaigns and let them run. What they don't do is dig into the search term report. Without aggressive negative keyword lists, you're paying for irrelevant traffic that will never convert.

Your Landing Page Is the Real Problem

They optimize the ad. They ignore the page it sends traffic to. If your landing page is slow or doesn't match the ad's promise, your Quality Score drops, CPCs rise, and conversion rate tanks.

Attribution Is Lying to You

Last-click attribution makes Google Ads look worse than it is for upper-funnel campaigns. Switch to data-driven attribution and look at assisted conversions before making budget decisions.

The fix: Pull your search term report. Add negatives aggressively. Load your landing page on mobile and time it. Fix those two things before touching your bids.
