How to Sell on Wayfair: What You Need to Know Before You Apply
Wayfair is one of the most important channels for home goods, furniture, and decor brands in North America. With over 22 million active customers, the distribution opportunity is significant — but the channel has specific operational and commercial requirements that need to be understood before you pursue it.
Wayfair's Drop-Ship Model
Unlike Amazon, Wayfair operates primarily on a drop-ship model. Wayfair lists your products, the customer places an order, and you ship directly to the customer under a Wayfair-branded label and with Wayfair-branded packaging inserts. You maintain the inventory. Wayfair owns the customer relationship.
Pricing and Margin Expectations
Wayfair negotiates a "cost" from you and sets their own retail price. They price aggressively and will compare your cost to competitive alternatives actively. You need to know your floor cost before entering pricing negotiations and hold it — once you reduce cost, recovering it is extremely difficult.
Shipping Speed and Compliance
Wayfair has strict shipping speed requirements. Orders placed before a cutoff time must ship the same day. Late shipments generate chargebacks and can result in listing suppression. You need to have the operational infrastructure to meet these requirements before going live.
Content Requirements
Wayfair requires product images in specific formats and dimensions, detailed product specifications, and category-specific attribute data. Incomplete content delays your listings going live and creates friction in the buyer relationship.
The fix: Before applying to Wayfair, model your margin at the cost they'll likely negotiate. If the margin works, ensure your fulfillment operation can meet same-day shipping requirements before your first product goes live.
