Amazon FBA and Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) solve a similar operational problem: inventory is sent into the marketplace's fulfilment network and customer orders are fulfilled from that inventory. That does not make the programmes interchangeable. For a Canadian brand selling on both marketplaces, the useful comparison is the economics and operating work for each SKU in each channel.

1. Compare the programmes separately

Start with the current programme information available for the marketplace and country you use. Fees, eligibility, receiving requirements, storage rules and available reports can differ by programme and change over time. Do not copy an FBA model into a WFS spreadsheet and assume the result is comparable.

Want to model your own SKU? Use the free FBA vs WFS calculator with your current fee and cost assumptions.

2. Build a total cost per order

Use the actual packaged dimensions and weight of the product. Include marketplace fees, fulfilment, storage assumptions, inbound freight, packaging or preparation work, expected returns and any other recurring handling cost that applies to your operation.

The comparison should also include the alternative. A self-fulfilled order may involve a 3PL receiving fee, storage, pick-and-pack, parcel shipping and return processing. The cheapest fulfilment fee in isolation is not necessarily the lowest total operating cost.

3. Treat inventory as a channel allocation decision

Inventory committed to FBA cannot simultaneously be sold through WFS, Shopify or another retailer unless you have separate stock available. Compare sales velocity, replenishment lead time, promotions and safety-stock assumptions by channel.

When one marketplace has limited history, a smaller initial allocation can reduce the risk of tying up too much working capital before demand is understood.

4. Compare inbound and receiving work

Document what your team or 3PL has to do before inventory is accepted into each network: shipment creation, labels, carton requirements, routing, carrier coordination and receiving follow-up. Keep shipment identifiers and quantity records so a receiving discrepancy can be investigated later.

5. Review returns and reconciliation

Fulfilment programmes reduce parcel-level work, but they do not remove the need to understand returns, inventory movements and settlement activity. Periodically connect the relevant reports and distinguish a documented discrepancy from a confirmed reimbursement or credit.

For the Walmart side, read the Walmart WFS Canada guide. For a structured records review, use the marketplace reimbursement checklist.

FBA vs WFS: inventory reporting, reimbursements and chargebacks

Compare the records and responsibilities, not an assumed reimbursement rate. A stock discrepancy, a fee deduction and a customer refund are different events. Neither a report mismatch nor a support case establishes that money is owed.

Deductions and chargebacksIdentify the transaction and account model first. Vendor Central deductions should not be treated as FBA seller inventory claims.Identify the specific fee or deduction and its supporting event. Do not treat all WFS charges as recoverable chargebacks.

A worked reconciliation example

Illustrative example, not a client result or marketplace policy: your shipment record shows 100 units sent and the receiving record initially shows 96. Record a four-unit exception. If a later receiving adjustment adds two units, the unresolved difference becomes two. If one of those units already has a matching approved credit, track one credited unit and one unresolved unit separately. Do not describe all four units as an unpaid claim.

Use separate columns for shipment ID, SKU, expected units, received units, later adjustments, prior credits, unresolved units, case number and next action. Reconcile unit quantities separately from credit values: an approved payment amount depends on the applicable rules and is not automatically the retail selling price.

For Walmart financial records, consult the Canadian WFS settlement report guide. For either marketplace, use the interactive reimbursement records checklist before requesting a reconciliation review.

6. Compare seller support and customer experience

Both fulfilment programmes handle parts of order fulfilment, but that does not mean they take over all seller responsibilities. Separate delivery and order-related customer service from account support, item issues, receiving cases, returns investigations and reporting. Identify which team owns each type of case and confirm the available support channels inside the applicable Canadian seller account.

Do not assume a two-day delivery promise applies to every product, destination or order. Check the customer-facing delivery estimate for the eligible listing and marketplace rather than treating a programme name as a universal shipping guarantee.

7. Check startup requirements, labels and inventory reporting

For an initial FBA or WFS launch, prepare a per-SKU checklist: eligibility, package measurements, shipment or routing instructions, barcode and carton labels, receiving records, inventory reporting and the process for reconciling adjustments. Confirm the latest label and packaging rules in the relevant programme before sending inventory. A label format that worked for one network should not be assumed valid for the other.

Compare available inventory and settlement reports as well as warehouse fees. If you sell through several channels, define who will reconcile quantities, transfers, storage charges, reimbursements and returns. Keep tax treatment separate from fulfilment fees; consult the current marketplace tax information and a qualified tax adviser for your specific Canadian situation.

8. Decide by SKU, not by platform preference

A product can make sense in FBA and not in WFS, or the reverse. Demand, dimensions, margins, replenishment reliability and the amount of stock you are willing to allocate all matter. Run the comparison by product and revisit it when fees, sales velocity or supplier lead times change.

9. Assign ownership before scaling

Someone still needs to own inventory monitoring, inbound shipments, receiving issues, account cases, returns and financial reconciliation. Fulfilment automation works best when those responsibilities are explicit.
