Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) gives eligible Marketplace sellers another way to handle fulfilment instead of shipping every customer order from their own warehouse or 3PL. For Canadian brands, the important question is not simply whether WFS is available. It is whether the programme fits the economics, inventory plan and operating responsibilities of the products you intend to sell.

Walmart Canada’s Marketplace Learn documentation describes WFS as a programme that stores inventory and fulfils customer orders, with customer support and returns handled for WFS orders. Programme requirements and fees can change, so confirm the current details in Walmart’s Canadian documentation and your Seller Center account before making inventory or pricing decisions.

Is WFS a good fit for your business?

Start with a small, eligible assortment whose Canadian demand and margin you can evaluate. WFS may fit when you want to move individual order fulfilment out of your warehouse and can assign stock specifically to Walmart. It needs closer review when demand is unproven, cash is tied up in slow-moving inventory, or the same units are needed by several channels.

This is a decision guide, not a customer-review score or a promise of sales. Evaluate the tradeoffs against your own fulfilment option:

WFS seller decision checklist
DecisionWhat to verify before a pilot
Product economicsCompare total contribution after referral fees, fulfilment, storage, inbound freight, returns and advertising assumptions.
Inventory commitmentChoose a quantity you can allocate to Walmart without creating shortages elsewhere. Set a review date and replenishment owner.
Warehouse workloadCompare the order-picking work WFS takes on with the shipment preparation, receiving follow-up and reconciliation your team retains.
Returns and exceptionsConfirm return preferences and assign someone to match refunds, returned units, inventory movements and settlement entries.

At the pilot review, compare actual sales, contribution, stock cover, return costs and time spent resolving exceptions. Expand only when the results support the next inventory commitment. Use the FBA vs WFS calculator to organise your assumptions, then discuss the operating plan through WFS consulting support.

1. Understand what WFS changes

With WFS, eligible inventory is sent into Walmart’s fulfilment network. When a customer orders that inventory, Walmart handles the fulfilment workflow for the WFS order. That can reduce day-to-day parcel fulfilment work, but it does not remove the seller’s responsibility for assortment decisions, product data, inventory planning, replenishment and financial reconciliation.

Treat WFS as an operating model, not just a shipping rate. Decide who will monitor inventory, create inbound shipments, investigate receiving discrepancies and review returns and settlement activity.

2. Model the costs by SKU

Walmart Canada’s published WFS information identifies fulfilment and monthly storage as core fee categories. Use the current Canadian fee information for the programme and the actual packaged dimensions and weight of each product. Do not copy an Amazon FBA model and assume the economics will be the same.

Compare the full cost of each option. A self-fulfilled order may include 3PL storage, pick-and-pack charges, packaging, parcel shipping, receiving, return processing and internal administration. A WFS order has a different cost structure and also requires inventory to be moved into Walmart’s network.

The useful comparison is total cost per order, inventory implications and operating workload—not one fulfilment fee in isolation.

3. Decide how much inventory to send

Inventory committed to WFS is inventory that cannot simultaneously sit in your warehouse for another channel. For brands selling through Amazon, Shopify, retail accounts and other marketplaces, allocation matters.

Build replenishment decisions around sellable WFS inventory, recent sales velocity, expected promotions, inbound stock, supplier lead time and a defined safety-stock approach. Separate inventory that is available now from units still being produced, shipped or received.

Sending too little can create stockouts. Sending too much can tie up working capital and increase storage exposure. Start with a controlled assortment when you do not yet have enough Walmart sales history to support a larger commitment.

4. Keep inbound shipment records

Maintain a record of what you intended to send, what the carrier moved and what Walmart ultimately received. Keep the shipment identifiers, SKU quantities and supporting records needed to investigate a discrepancy.

A difference between your shipment record and a marketplace report is a reason to investigate. It is not automatically proof that inventory is missing or that a reimbursement is owed. Check subsequent receiving events, adjustments and the applicable programme rules before deciding what action is required.

5. Review returns and settlement activity

WFS handling of customer returns does not eliminate the need for seller-side reconciliation. Periodically connect returns, inventory movements, credits and settlement activity so you understand what happened to the units and money associated with an order.

Keep potential discrepancies separate from confirmed or approved adjustments. Timing differences, later credits and different transaction types can create apparent gaps between reports. For a structured approach, use the marketplace reimbursement review checklist. If you need help reconciling the records, see marketplace reimbursement review support.

6. Choose WFS products deliberately

Evaluate products individually rather than moving an entire catalogue by default. Consider expected demand, packaged dimensions, margin after marketplace and fulfilment costs, replenishment reliability and the amount of stock you are comfortable allocating to Walmart.

A product that performs well through Amazon FBA is not automatically a good WFS candidate. Walmart is a separate channel with its own customer demand, operating records and programme requirements.

7. Compare WFS with Amazon FBA on the same basis

If you operate both channels, compare the programmes using the same SKU-level inputs rather than assuming one marketplace's fulfilment model will translate directly to the other. The Amazon FBA vs Walmart WFS Canada guide covers cost, inventory allocation, inbound work, returns and reconciliation side by side. You can also compare your own FBA and WFS assumptions.

8. Assign ownership before you scale

Before the first inbound shipment, decide who owns item setup, WFS shipment creation, inventory monitoring, replenishment, Seller Center cases, returns and reconciliation. A fulfilment programme can remove individual shipping tasks while still creating account work that needs a clear owner.

If you are still preparing the channel, use the Walmart Marketplace launch checklist. If the ongoing Walmart work needs an owner, explore Walmart WFS consulting or broader Walmart Marketplace management or tell me what is happening in your account.
