How to Sell on Costco Canada: What Vendors Need to Know

By Scott Nguyen · Jun 26, 2024 · 1 min read

Costco Canada is one of the most coveted retail accounts for consumer product brands — and one of the most demanding. Getting listed is a genuine business transformation. Getting listed unprepared can be a business disaster.

The Costco Buying Philosophy

Costco buyers look for a small number of items in each category that offer exceptional value to their members. They are not looking for your full product catalogue — they want one or two items that can be sold at the Costco value equation: premium quality at a price that makes members feel they're getting a deal. If your product doesn't have a genuinely differentiated value story, Costco is not the right channel.

Pack Size and Configuration

Costco sells in bulk. Your product needs to be configured in a multi-pack or large-format size that makes sense for their members. This typically requires a product configuration that doesn't exist in your current line — which means tooling, packaging, and supply chain changes before your first order.

Margin Expectations

Costco's cost expectations are aggressive. They will negotiate hard and they have the leverage of the volume they represent. Know your absolute cost floor before entering any pricing conversation. Costco margins are typically thin — the volume compensates, but only if you've modelled the economics correctly.

Operational Requirements

Costco has strict packaging, labelling, EDI, and compliance requirements. Non-compliance results in chargebacks. Their volume can overwhelm unprepared supply chains. Before your first Costco PO, verify that your manufacturing, logistics, and administrative operations can scale to their volume requirements.

The fix: Before pursuing a Costco meeting, model the margin at a cost 30% below your current list cost. If the business still makes sense at that cost, you're ready to have the conversation.
